A reinforcing fibre with high strength and modulus; density is equal to that of aluminium. It is used in organic metal-matrix composites. Silicon nitride is almost as light as silicon carbide (SiC). It has high wear resistance along with high temperature and high corrosion resistance at low specific weight. The presence of micro-structure gives them exceptional thermal shock resistance and their high fracture toughness makes them resistant to impact and shocks.
Silicon nitride - silicon carbide composite was developed by using an abrasive SiC powders as a raw material. The composites were prepared by mixing abrasive SiC powder with silicon, pressing and sintering at °C under nitrogen atmosphere in atmosphere controlled vacuum furnace.
